The Testimony of Joelle Aziz: A Legacy of Translation and Integrity
In my capacity as the owner of Joelle Aziz Translation Firm for the past 30 years, and as a sworn translator, I have gained extensive experience working with a wide range of clients and situations. Over the years, I have learned that a professional translator must possess not only strong linguistic skills, but also patience, integrity, accuracy, and professionalism.
A good translator should always listen carefully to clients’ needs, respect confidentiality, and maintain high ethical standards. Patience is essential, as clients may sometimes be under stress, unfamiliar with legal procedures, or uncertain about the requirements of official documents. A translator must therefore guide clients calmly and professionally.
If I may address a message to the new generation of translators, especially sworn translators, I would say this: “translation is not merely the transfer of words from one language to another; it is a responsibility founded on trust, ethics, accuracy, and respect for both the law and the people we serve. Uphold the dignity of this profession with honesty, patience, and professionalism. Let your work always be guided by integrity, confidentiality, and impartiality, values internationally recognized and respected by translators’ syndicates and professional associations around the world. A translator’s signature is not only a certification of language, but also a commitment to truth and professional honor”.
At the same time, experience has taught me that it is equally important to know when to refuse a request in a respectful and courteous manner. There are situations where a translator must say “no”, for example, when a request is unethical, inaccurate, illegal, misleading, or impossible to complete within proper professional standards. Refusing such requests politely protects both the integrity of the translator and the interests of the client.
Professionalism does not only mean accepting work; it also means setting clear boundaries and maintaining honesty and transparency. A courteous refusal, explained with respect and clarity, often earns clients’ trust and demonstrates true professionalism.
Throughout my career, I have come to believe that successful translation work is built on trust, patience, ethics, precision, and mutual respect between the translator and the client.
Last but not least, never be afraid to expand your knowledge across different fields and areas of expertise. A successful translator should always remain curious and committed to continuous learning. The more knowledge you acquire in legal, medical, technical, financial, and cultural fields, the better you will understand the true meaning and context behind the words you translate. Translation is not limited to language alone; it requires a deep understanding of the subject matter itself. Broadening your knowledge strengthens your analytical skills, improves the quality and accuracy of your work, and allows you to serve clients with greater confidence and professionalism. In particular, gaining deeper legal knowledge is essential for sworn translators, as it enables them to handle official and sensitive documents with precision, responsibility, and full awareness of their legal implications.
