As journalists from around the world, we had the privilege of visiting Astana to cover the SCO Summit during the month of July 2024. This opportunity allowed us to not only report on the significant event but also to explore and immerse ourselves in the beauty of this remarkable city.
Curious about Astana’s historical and cultural marvels, I wondered where I could discover them. The answer was simple: Astana, this marvelous city, invited me to delve into its past, offering a plethora of historical sites that showcase its cultural heritage. The city’s architecture is a testament to its history, with buildings reflecting various eras and styles.
Our group of journalists began our tour at the must-visit Bayterek Tower, a symbol of Astana and Kazakhstan. This 97-meter-tall tower offers a panoramic view of the city and is a perfect starting point to understand its layout and landmarks.
Another notable site is the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, designed by the renowned architect Norman Foster. This pyramid-shaped building is not just an architectural marvel but also a symbol of Kazakhstan's commitment to peace and unity. It houses a museum, a library, and a concert hall, making it a hub of cultural activities.
As I walked through the streets, I encountered another architectural gem: the Kazakhstan Central Concert Hall. With its unique design reminiscent of flower petals, it is one of the largest concert halls in the world and regularly hosts performances by local and international artists.
The day after the SCO Summit, we had the opportunity to visit Astana’s National Museum, a vast and impressive institution showcasing Kazakhstan's rich history and cultural heritage. The museum's stunning architecture and extensive collections offered a deep dive into the region's past, from ancient artifacts to contemporary art.
Our day continued with a visit to the Future Energy Museum in Astana, developed as part of Expo 2017. This museum is dedicated to the exploration and promotion of sustainable energy solutions. Its exhibits highlight renewable energy sources, energy efficiency technologies, and the latest advancements in sustainable practices. The museum's interactive displays and educational programs aim to raise awareness about the importance of transitioning to a sustainable energy future. The Future Energy Museum stands as a testament to Kazakhstan's commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship, inspiring visitors to envision a world powered by clean and renewable energy.
Have you ever wondered about modern attractions in Astana?
While Astana is deeply rooted in its history, it is also a city that embraces modernity. The cityscape is dotted with futuristic buildings, each contributing to the dynamic skyline. The Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center, for instance, is a massive transparent tent that houses a shopping mall, a park, and even an indoor beach resort. This center is a testament to Astana's innovative spirit and its commitment to providing world-class amenities to its residents and visitors.
But don’t forget the beauty of its wide green spaces. Astana is not just about architectural marvels; it also boasts beautiful green spaces. The city's variety of plants and flowers offers an ideal place for a quiet moment of reflection.
When you think of grandeur and admiration, the Presidential Park comes to mind. Located along the banks of the Ishim River, this beautiful green space offers picturesque views of the city and is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. The park is perfect for a relaxing walk or a picnic, providing a peaceful retreat from the urban hustle and bustle.
Another thing that captivated my attention is Astana's identity as a City of Harmony and Unity, where various cultures coexist. This multiculturalism is evident in the city's diverse communities, festivals, and culinary offerings, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. In Astana, people from different backgrounds live together, sharing their traditions and enriching the city's cultural fabric. This sense of unity and mutual respect makes Astana not just a city, but a symbol of harmony and togetherness.
During our time in Astana, we were fortunate to experience the warm hospitality of its people. Their friendliness and willingness to share their culture and history made our visit even more memorable.
Exploring everything but not forgetting to taste its mouthwatering cuisine! Dare to say yes to its food. Don’t miss any of its succulent dishes.
The culinary scene in Astana is a dynamic fusion of traditional Kazakh flavors and international influences, reflecting the city's cosmopolitan atmosphere and historical roots. Traditional Kazakh dishes like Beshbarmak (boiled meat with noodles) and Kumis (fermented mare's milk) are staples that highlight the region's nomadic heritage.
At the same time, Astana embraces modern culinary trends with innovative chefs blending local ingredients with global techniques. This blend is evident in upscale restaurants offering gourmet experiences that cater to both local tastes and international palates.
Overall, whether you're savoring traditional Kazakh delicacies or indulging in international fare, Astana offers a culinary journey that blends history, culture, and innovation on every plate.
‘Dear Astana, at the end of my journey, I promise to bring you to Lebanon through the platforms of Lebanese television. I will proudly showcase your beauty and share your story with the world’.
I will tell the audience that with your blend of historical significance, modern architecture, and natural beauty, you are a city that leaves a lasting impression.
