On July 2, Dr. Andrée Affeiche, Associate Professor of Translation at the Lebanese American University (LAU), paid a courtesy visit to the Joelle Aziz Translation Firm. She was warmly received by Ms. Joelle Aziz, sworn translator and owner of the firm, who hosted the visit and facilitated discussions with the team.
The visit brought together Dr. Affeiche, professional translators, and interns in a dynamic exchange centered on current developments in the translation industry. The discussions explored the practical realities of translation work, including quality assurance, terminology management, and the increasing integration of digital tools in professional practice. Particular attention was given to the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and machine translation systems, and how these technologies are reshaping workflows, improving productivity, and raising new questions about accuracy, authorship, and ethical responsibility.
Dr. Affeiche emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong balance between technological adoption and human expertise, stressing that linguistic nuance, cultural sensitivity, and critical judgment remain essential components of high-quality translation. The interns also shared their perspectives on adapting to new tools while building foundational skills in translation theory and practice.
Ms. Aziz highlighted the firm’s commitment to professional standards and continuous development, noting the importance of mentorship and real-world exposure for emerging translators. The visit concluded with a mutual exchange of ideas aimed at strengthening collaboration between academic institutions and professional translation practice, while preparing future translators for an evolving industry shaped by both innovation and tradition.
